In the 2009/10 season Wayne Rooney was in absolute top form for Manchester United and played a central role in the club's success. With Cristiano Ronaldo just sold to Real Madrid, Rooney became the team's main attacking star, and he lived up to expectations with his best scoring season in a United shirt.
Rooney scored no fewer than 26 Premier League goals and finished second in the scoring charts, beaten only by Didier Drogba of Chelsea. He became known for his explosive style and his ability to decide matches with both headers and powerful finishes, and his heading in particular became notably strong that season. His performances earned him the PFA Player of the Year and FWA Footballer of the Year awards.
Despite Rooney's impressive season, United finished second in the Premier League, just one point behind Chelsea. In the Champions League, United reached the quarter final but were eliminated by Bayern Munich in a dramatic tie in which Rooney struggled with an injury. Despite that disappointment, Rooney proved his invaluable role at United and once again wrote himself into the club's history books as one of their greatest strikers.
